The Cloak of Whispers

Wearing a Red Coat in the Park

It was a cold wintry evening, when Jessica was returning home after a busy day at the office. Jessica was a proof-reader at a small publishing house. She had been working at the company for over a decade, after her university degree in English was completed.

Jessica loved her job and the small group of colleagues who worked with her. She loved the city, that was perfect for her in every way and had so much to offer, from the large parks, where she enjoyed running through every morning, to the coffee shops, the swimming centre and the church where she would visit every Sunday for mass. The city was so much more exciting than her small village where she was born and grew up. Her parents still took care of the farm with her brother Frank and his family.

The thin jacket that Jessica wore was not enough for the cold weather. She was passing by a used clothes store and noticed a slim, smart looking long red jacket, with a cloak and cap in the shop window. The price was reasonable, at only 20 pounds. Jessica rushed into the store; it was closing in five minutes. She picked up the red jacket, the cloak and cap, paid the lady and rushed out of the store. The jacket was a perfect fit and the cloak was a good fit, as was the smart red cap. She felt so warm, protected and comfortable wearing these three pieces of clothing.

The next morning, as Jessica put on her jacket, cloak and cap, she was surprised to hear voices, though there was no one living with her in her tiny apartment. The neighbours were away on holiday and she looked outside her window and the street was quiet, as was the corridor outside her flat in the old building where she had lived for years.

She listened again and tried to understand the whispers that she was hearing. The whispers were speaking to her and they were telling her not to go to work. Instead, she needed to buy a newspaper and apply for the job of an Editor at a leading publishing house. Should she do what the whispers said to her wondered Jessica.? She knew that she had talent and could get a better job. Jessica walked out of her home that day, bought a newspaper, applied for the job advertised and she succeeded in getting the job as an Editor in the best city newspaper. Her fortunes rose and grew and very soon Jessica was a millionaire and the CEO of a Fortune 500 publishing house. It was not always easy and she did have many trials and obstacles to overcome, but she did it with the help of the whispers from her red cloak.

The whispers from the cloak were helping her to succeed in life, but would that continue forever or did she have to do something to pay-back to the cloak, for helping her in life? That would be another much longer story, possibly a novella or a novel.
